Wedding Planning FAQs:

Your Guide to Getting Started

So you’re engaged… Now what?

The excitement of saying "yes" is quickly followed by the realization that planning a wedding involves a lot of decisions. If you’re feeling a little overwhelmed, don’t worry. I’ve put together answers to some of the most common questions couples have in the early stages of wedding planning. But first. Take a second, take a deep breath, and tell yourself that you’re doing amazing.

1. What’s the first thing we should do after getting engaged?

Before diving into planning, take a moment to celebrate your engagement!! Whether it’s an intimate dinner, a trip, or a full-blown party, enjoy this time together before the whirlwind of decisions begins.

When you're ready to start planning, the first steps are:

  • Set a rough guest count (this will determine your venue options)

  • Talk about your ideal wedding vibe (formal, casual, destination, etc.)

  • Set a budget range (more on that below)

  • Consider hiring a planner (especially if you want a stress-free experience)

2. How do we set a wedding budget?

Your budget will determine everything from your guest list to your vendor choices, so this is one of the most important early conversations. Here’s how to break it down:

  • Determine your overall spending limit. Consider contributions from family or what you’re comfortable spending.

  • Prioritize what matters most. If photography, food, or entertainment is important to you, allocate more funds there and adjust elsewhere.

  • Factor in hidden costs. Taxes, gratuities, transportation, and attire alterations can add up.

  • Use a wedding budget calculator. Many online tools help estimate costs based on location and guest count.

  • Do NOT feel like you need to increase your budget just because someone else or the internet says to!

3. How do we choose a wedding venue?

Your venue sets the tone for everything else, so it’s one of the first things to book. When touring venues, consider:

  • Capacity: Does it fit your guest count comfortably?

  • Aesthetic: Does it align with your vision and photography style? Your photos WILL be a reflection of your environment, so it’s important!

  • Logistics: Is it easy for guests to get to? What’s the backup plan for weather?

  • Cost & Inclusions: What’s included in the rental fee? Will you need to bring in rentals or outside catering?

Venues in high-demand areas like NYC, DC, and coastal destinations often book out 12-18 months in advance, so start your search early.

4. When should we book our wedding vendors?

Each vendor books at a different pace, but here’s a general timeline for booking top vendors:

  • 12-18 months out: Venue, planner, photographer, videographer

  • 8-12 months out: Florist, caterer, band or DJ, hair & makeup

  • 6-8 months out: Stationery, transportation, cake or dessert vendors

  • 3-6 months out: Officiant, final rentals, favors & details

I recommend booking your photographer 8-12 months in advance, especially if you want a specific style like documentary, editorial, or film photography. If you’re getting married in a popular season, don’t wait too long! I have a whole blog post about this right here.

5. How do we pick the right photographer?

Your wedding photographer is one of the most important vendors, so it’s worth taking the time to find someone who matches your vision. Of course I would love it to be me, but here’s what to consider:

  • Style: Do you want a classic, documentary, or editorial look?

  • Approach: Do you prefer a hands-off photographer or someone who directs more?

  • Personality: You’ll spend a lot of time with them. Make sure you vibe! You do NOT have to be besties. But you DO have to get along well.

  • Deliverables: Are you interested in an album? Printed photos? Just digital? Film? Identify what you love! Your photos are forever.
